Going That Extra Mile To Become A Champion
Have you ever had a broken watch that you had for many years. What if, before we give up on a seemingly insurmountable challenge or chore, we would make an extra effort to see if we could fix something that isn’t working. Granted, a watch winder is not a sophisticated computer or similar machine.
And, it’s not that one couldn’t afford to buy another one. However, the significant point is to take a few minutes to see if you could come up with a solution. The fix could end up being much simpler that you had originally, envisioned.
I believe that champions become that way because they go the extra mile when others are willing to give up.
Football running backs are coached to reach for an extra yard when they are tackled.
Just ask Jim Brown, all-time NFL football great turned actor, was an eight-time All-Pro and three-time MVP and never missed a game in his NFL career, averaged more than one touchdown per game, every game, and averaged 5.2 yards per carry, the highest in NFL history.
Michael Phelps is the most decorated Olympian of all time with a total of 22 medals in three Olympiads. Michael swam his way into history, winning his seventh gold medal, at the 2008 Beijing Olympics. Who could forget Michael Phelps powering his way to victory in the 100 m butterfly event, and touching the wall only “a hundredth of a second” ahead of Milorad Cavic, who, actually, dominated the first half of the event. When Michael was asked how did he manage to eke out his historical Olympic gold medal win by a hundredth of a second. He responded, “Coach Bowman taught me that in each and every swim meet I a race important to you, always try your hardest, stretch as far as you can before hitting the wall, and never, ever give up!
Napoleon Hill, in the book “Think and Grow Rich” said that going the extra mile is a hallmark of great achievers. What if we all went the extra mile in everything we did this week? Isn’t this as good a time as any to do so?
An Extra Mile Affirmation
“I always go the extra mile and look for ways to solve problems.”
You are special. You are unique. You are destined for greatness.
