Fitness for Kids

Back when I was a kid, getting our exercise was pretty simple — we were outside running

around with our friends or playing ball in the park after school! Nowadays, with the advent of the

Internet, video games and a host of other “indoor activities,” our children aren’t as active as we

once were. So now we must make an effort to make sure our kids are getting the exercise they

need to be healthy and happy!

 

MAKE IT A FAMILY AFFAIR

Most of the time, your kids wants to spend time with you (if they aren’t teenagers yet!) By

being active all together, everyone benefits. Take a family bike ride, go for walks in the

evening after dinner when everyone is home or shoot hoops in the driveway. There’s so

many ways to be active all together which means you’re working out and bonding with

your child all at the same time!

 

TEAM ACTIVITIES

Sign your child up for a team league or activity that will get them moving multiple times a

week. Little League, dance lessons or swim team — this list goes on and on. Just make

sure it’s something your child actually enjoys doing or you’ll be doing weekly battle to get

them to attend their lessons. Listen to your child’s preferences, they may even find a

lifelong passion of theirs — what a bonus!

 

LIMIT TIME WITH ELECTRONICS

As a parent it’s a good idea to enforce a limit on how much time your child spends in

front of the TV, computer or smartphone. Stick to a set time and then encourage your

child to get outside and move around! And if they really can’t sever themselves from

their electronic device, why not download some apps that encourage movement or a

video game that has a physical component? The key is to keep them moving!

 

It’s so important for our children to remain in tune with their bodies as they grow. By staying fit

and active they are poised for success in school with healthy minds and healthy bodies. All of

which leads to happiness, which is what we all want for our kids!
