Seniors Should Stretch, Too!

Too often as we age, we let the care of our bodies fall by the wayside. “I’m too old for exercise,” one might say — I say NONSENSE! In fact, staying fit as a senior is one of the most important things you can do for your health. The stronger you are, the more you’re in tune with your body and able to control it. So exercise and a healthy diet should be at the forefront of your mind, especially for the seniors in your life.

Falls for senior citizens are the number one cause of injury among this population. Sometimes a fall can even cause so much damage, they are never the same again. One out of five falls for a senior 65+ causes a huge injury — a broken bone or head trauma for example. Many factors can cause a fall like dizziness due to a vitamin D deficiency or even clutter around the house.

In addition to cleaning up the house and getting some sunshine, one of the best things seniors can do to prevent falls is to exercise! Exercise will improve balance, strengthen muscles and as we all know, endorphins do great things for our overall mood! Take a look at our instructional video for some recommended stretches for seniors. Also, yoga, tai chi, swimming and leisurely walks are also great for building strength and endurance. Above all, be careful and have fun — our seniors should enjoy their golden years, they’ve earned it!
